Soil–water characteristic curve of unsaturated collapsible soils

چکیده

Abstract Collapsible soils are almost found in unsaturated states and involved significant engineering problems. Geotechnical challenges of such represented by the hydro-mechanical behaviour during wetting–drying cycles due to humidity climate conditions. The main objective this paper is investigate soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) collapsible soils. In study, three types were investigated as natural sandy gypseous, silty loess, artificial soil gypsum–sand mixture. Determination wetting drying paths has been done using a combination axis-translation technique ( i.e . pressure plate device) vapour equilibrium salts solution desiccators) cover wide range applied suction. test results show that air-entry value for all occurs at very low suction range. At boundary effect zone, coarse grain size mass cannot hold water molecules pore space, even with imposed Moreover, amount hysteresis varied based on geological formation homogeneity fabric. Furthermore, SWCC interpreted insignificant volume change slight reduction void ratio, especially high

Estimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils

In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...

An evolutionary approach to modelling the soil-water characteristic curve in unsaturated soils

In this paper a new approach is presented based on evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR) for modelling of soil–water characteristic curve in unsaturated soils. EPR is an evolutionary data mining technique that generates a transparent and structured representation of the behaviour of a system directly from data. This method can operate on large quantities of data in order to capture nonlinear...

Failure Process of Stone Columns in Collapsible Soils

Many countries in the word have loose and unstable soils encompassing a wide range ofgeological materials, which when inundated, may collapse and cause very significant distress to the structure. Stone columns have been used to strengthen such soils; even so, there are still cases where failure has occurred. In this technical note, the process and causes of stone column failure in reinforcing c...

Theoretical Undrained Shear Behaviour of Unsaturated Soils

Prediction method for undrained shear behaviour of unsaturated soils is discussed in this paper. Based on Original Cam Clay model, authors have proposed constitutive model for unsaturated soils that the effect of water content is incorporated into superloading surface concept. Firstly, stress path of constant volume shear test is formulated under constant void ratio condition. And relationship ...
